The Designers
Eileen and Anders Anderson began as students of Industrial Design at the University of Cincinnati. They completed study later switching emphasis to fine art and craft. Eileen drew inspiration for the architectural ceramic business from travel through Europe. Together they set up a studio in 1974 serving clients with hand forged ornamental ironwork as well as decorative tiles. By 1980 they shifted focus exclusively toward the tile business working for both residential and commercial clients. They have built an extensive collection of tile designs inspired by the needs of customers as much as by their own vision. Their goal is to create a solution that addresses and exceeds all requirements of a client’s project. |

Tiles— General Information Our tiles are made by hand using a variety of techniques from direct modeling to pressing moist clay into plaster molds of our own design. These methods along with manual handling of the clay impart a character to the finished surface that is not duplicated in a machine made product. Simple processes also allow us the flexibility to customize our tiles and adapt them to a wide variety of styles and applications. Field tiles and most of the decorative tiles are about 3/8” in thickness at the edge and will vary slightly. If you are using our tiles in combination with thinner tiles, it is not usually a problem since our tiles are glazed over the edge. The resulting slight projection from the surface will even enhance the decorative effect. We can provide bull nose tiles and corners for a neatly finished edge where needed. Please contact us if you have questions about the exact size of any particular tile. Our tiles are made from a red earthenware clay body fired to maturity at 2000 degrees F. They have the hardness and strength to be used anywhere decorative tile is appropriate. Installation materials and methods are the same as for any other high quality ceramic tile. Cutting and trimming is best accomplished with a wet saw. Water absorption is about 5%. It is suitable for exterior application in Northern climates. Our recommendation is that the tile be used on vertical surfaces if it is to be exposed to weather.

Custom Work We can create a custom focal point installation for your site using existing tiles from our large collection or even by creating custom tiles or sculptural relief surfaces specific to the application. A large selection of glaze colors is available to chose from to work together with your surrounding materials. Plain field tiles can be made in almost any shape and up to a size limited by our tools and equipment. Most installations make use of a combination of relief tiles, borders, trims or dividers and flat tiles of various shapes and sizes.
To begin your project, we will need dimensions of the area involved and information about the immediate environment. Photographs or digital images are ideal. Often there are elements in the architecture and furnishings that suggest solutions. It is important to have a conversation about your objectives and the constraints that you are working with. Clients close to us will probably want to visit the studio. Often, we will respond with sketches or images of our proposed solution. Once we have finalized the design and the governing terms, we will begin production. Delivery times can vary depending on the complexity of the project and the shop schedule at the time. We will provide our best estimate. Tile is often one of the last steps in a construction or remodeling project, however, be sure to allow adequate time to go through the design and production process.
Our training is in art and design. With complete control over the design and production process, we feel confident that we can create a highly individualized, artistically considered solution to your situation that will add pleasure and value to your environment for years to come. We are proud of our work and are as interested in the final result as you are. We look forward to working with you! |
